Details
Mission and Objectives GSE Forest Monitoring is a European Space Agency (ESA) funded project. It is part of the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) Services Element (GSE). The GSE Forest Monitoring (GSE FM) consortium was set up to address the policy related demands for securing the ecological functions in the forestry and land-use sector. The first stage (2003-2004) consolidated services related to information needs of environmental policies such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The second stage (2005-2008) focused on the scaling-up of consolidated services. The third stage (2009-2012) is focusing to address the policy related demands for REDD+ in developing countries based on EO data.

Main Activities The main activities are the scaling-up and implementing GSE services according to users needs with respect to forest information services. This includes the following tasks: (a) User Federation & Strategic Planning, (b) Service Network Coordination, (c) Service Provision & Qualification, and (d) Service Portfolio Evolution. The services can be grouped into the following categories: (1) Pan European Forest Monitoring Service, (2) Support to National UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol reporting on LULUCF activities, (3) Forest Information Update at National and Sub-national scales, (4) Support to Environmental Monitoring at National and Sub-national scales, (5) Detection and Post-monitoring of natural and human-induced forest disturbances, (6) Services supporting management and reporting obligations of LULUCF CDM projects and (7) Services related to Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+).

Membership The "GSE Forest Monitoring" consortium is led by the prime contractor GAF AG. The consortium consists of a large number companies and public institutes or administrations, which are involved as service providers, research partners, system partners or end users.
