Description
SDIC Title MyOcean
Acronym MyOcean
Details
Mission and Objectives MyOcean Service provides the best information available on the Ocean for the large scale (worldwide coverage) and regional scales (European seas), based on the combination of space and in situ observations, and their assimilation into 3D simulation models: temperature, salinity, currents, ice extent, sea level, primary ecosystems, … MyOcean service is available: * anywhere (the service covers the whole globe) * at any depth (models give access to a 3D depiction) * at anytime (in real time, with short term forecast, and also past situations for at least the last 25 years) * to anyone (access to products is open and free). Maritime security, oil spill prevention, marine resources management, climate change, seasonal forecasting, coastal activities, ice sheet surveys, water quality and pollution … are some of the targeted applications.
Mandate MyOcean is the implementation project of the GMES Marine Core Service, aiming at deploying the first concerted and integrated pan-European capacity for Ocean Monitoring and Forecasting. During years 2009-2011, thanks to FP7 co-fundings, MyOcean will lead the setting up of this new European service, grown on past investments in research & development, system development and international collaborations.
Formal Mandate European Commission
Main Activities Current version (V0 Service) : MyOcean service allows all users to access a catalogue of worldwide and European regional Ocean products (real time observations, analysis and forecast) that have been developed and made available under previous projects such as MERSEA, MARCOAST, POLARVIEW, ECOOP, GLOBCOLOR. All products (see MyOcean catalogue) have been gathered and made accessible through a single "Online Queryable Catalogue". In this version, the products are still hosted on their respective web portals (thus, by clicking on "access to products" you will be conducted to other web portals). Products and services are open and free (but subject to restriction in re-distribution : see Licence) to any user and for any application, including commercial activities. Next release (V1 Service) : At the end of 2010, MyOcean pan-European full fledged service will offer a single and reliable entry point to users and a direct acces to all products. The web portal will be directly connected to production units all over Europe in order to ensure homogeneity, traceability and full operationality. Service will include "INSPIRE" functionalities (discovering, vizualisation, downloading, tools, …) and a 24/7 helpdesk.

Membership MyOcean is a consortium of 61 partners spread over 29 European countries, aims at designing and operating the first integrated capacity for Ocean Monitoring and Forecasting. This is the development of the first step towards the future GMES Marine Core Service, co-funded by the European Commission.

Previous Experience relevant for INSPIRE development Keiran has been involved with INSPIRE and GMES since their inception. Importantly he lead the MOTTIVE project to develop the INSPIRE D2.6 Methodology along with the RISE project. MOTIIVE focused on requiremnts in the marine domain. Currently Keiran is advising the UK Government on the development of an environmental monitoring catalogue to inform UK contribution to SEIS and the GMES in-situ network. He is also a member of the MuOcean project with a particular mandate (and funding) for INSPIRE data specifications. Keiran has 15 years national and international experience in systems, marine and coastal engineering. His key expertise is in data and information provision systems for environmental management and is author of new published guidelines on effective data use in coastal management. Keiran has been on the steering committee of 12 EC projects including three as co-ordinator (ENVALDAT, MarineXML, Motiive). All these projects involved multi-disciplinary knowledge cohesion and systems development. These projects are: MyOcean (DG Environment): Operational Oceanography Information Systems ECOOP (DG Environment): Operational Oceanography Information Systems MOTIIVE (DG Enterprise):Data exchange systems using open standards MarineXML (DG Environment): XML standards for data exchange HABES (DG Environment): Knowledgebase for Harmful Algal Blooms ARION (DG-IST): Digital Libraries for Scientific Data F-ECTS (MAST): Coastal management modelling AVID(DGXIII-Telematics): Added value data disrtibution THETIS (DGXIII-Telematics): Coastal Management information provision systems DESIMA (DGXII-E&C/CEO): Coastal Management support systems ENVALDAT (DGXII-E&C/CEO): Data and information value
