Description
SDIC Title SDI GDI-Flanders
Acronym GDI-Flanders
Details
Mission and Objectives Mission: "Ensuring the optimal use of geographic information in Flanders" Objectives: 1. To re-enforce collaboration within the GI community 2. To develop a coordination, organizational and legal framework for the geographic information infrastructure of Flanders 3. To develop and exploit a geographic data infrastructure for Flanders 4. To stimulate the transfer of technical expertise.
Mandate In 1995 the Flemish Government established a framework and partnership, further referred to as “GIS-Flanders”, with the aim to facilitate the exchange of geographical information among all governmental (regional and local) and public service agencies. This framework was further institutionalised by a decree in 2000. The Agency for Geographic Information in Flanders (AGIV) is the executing agency in charge of implementing the objectives of GIS-Flanders (described in the decree. A second decree (April 2004) outlines the implementation of a Large Scale Reference Database for which AGIV is the coordinating and implementing agency.
Formal Mandate Regional Government
Main Activities AGIV has initially focussed its activities on 1) geographical data dissemination; 2) providing advice and services on the use of geographic information; 3) the execution of extensive pilot projects to initiate the development of a regional SDI. Meanwhile the agency shifted from a project to a programme oriented way of working. This change in operations aims at ensuring a sound client oriented development of the regional SDI through an extensive participatory structural collaboration among the partners of GIS-Flanders. GIS-Flanders has two core programmes that are complementary and that aim to establish a SDI for GIS-Flanders.

Membership By decree: Communal authorities Provincial authorities All departments of the Flemish Government All public service agencies
Typology Regional
Comments It should be emphasized that AGIV is the operational pillar of a cooperative framework including virtually all public authorities (according to the INSPIRE definition)of the Flanders region. Hence the cooperative framework forms as such the organisational component of the (regional) SDI.
