Formal Mandate The Institute of Geodesy and Cartography – IGiK - was founded in 1945. The Institute has a legal status, acting on the basis of regulations concerning research institutions. IGiK is a GI (geodesy, cartography, remote sensing, GIS, NSDI) national research institute of Poland. IGIK activities are currently supervised by the Minister of Infrastructure. The Institute of Geodesy and Cartography is authorised to confer doctor's degree in the field of geodesy, cartography and remote sensing and to conduct post-diploma studies. IGiK is one of the pioneers of digital cartography (first digital map was presented in 1957) and has a long experience of works concerning NSDI (first project in 1972). The tasks of IGiK related to INSPIRE issues include: RSDI & local SDI monitoring (RSDI Observatory), analysis of user requirements, consultation about the data policy, designing the RSDI and NSDI, implementation of pilot projects, participation in cost/benefit analysis, contribution to awareness raising and trainings.
Main Activities The main task of IGiK concerns research in the field of geodesy, cartography, remote sensing & photogrammetry, GIS & GI and related disciplines for the needs of science, geodetic and cartographic service, public life, administration and state security. The Institute works for different ministries (e.g. Environment, Forestry, Agriculture), governmental and self-governmental authorities, domestic and foreign scientific institutions and for geodetic/cartographic enterprises, regardless of their type of legal status. The Institute collaborates with many institutions in Poland and abroad. As the institution was involved (since the 70.) in works on Polish NSDI (SIS), RSDI and on multidisciplinary & interdepartmentary information infrastructures, IGiK has elaborated the methodology of identification, collection and description of user requirements, tested in many projects. Analysing data from RSDI & local SDI monitoring (IGiK RSDI Observatory) and European GI experiences, the Institute participates in creation and formulation of national data policy. The part of IGiK activities concerns integration of GI multidisciplinary data, data interoperability and data standardization. One of the first solutions in this scope (realised by IGiK in 80.) was Polish National Environmental Information System SINUS, integrating vector & multilevel grid system and using home developed GIS software system. IGiK was involved in designing, implementation & pilot projects and cost/benefit analysis of the RSDI (e.g. for Wielkopolskie Voivodship, Mazowieckie Voivodship, Malopolskie Voivodship), Integrated Cadastre National System, LPIS – Poland. The Institute has realised e.g. Less Favourites Areas National Database, National Forest Database, LPIS of Lithuania, Polish parts of: CORINE Land Cover ’90, CORINE Biotopes, CLC 2000, BT GIS, MapBSR. IGiK participates in many international projects (one of recent is GEOLAND – GMES project). Since 2001IGiK has been involved in INSPIRE activities. Their experts were active in Reference & Metadata and Architecture & Standards working groups. Director, Prof. Adam Linsenbarth is the expert of the INSPIRE Expert Group and member of Interministerial Committee for Spatial Information Systems (for INSPIRE) in Poland. The Institute prepared the Polish INSPIRE report. IGiK was one of the organisers of the 10thEC-GI&GIS workshop and the INSPIRE Warsaw meeting (2004). The Institute organises geodesy, IG, geomatics, data quality, data policy, remote sensing, photogrammetric seminaries & trainings.
