Formal Mandate SHOM is the French Hydrographic Office whose mission is to know and to describe the marine physical environment in its relations with the atmosphere, the sea bed and the littoral zones and to foresee their evolutions. SHOM provides the corresponding information (navigational charts for example) to all sea users. SHOM is member of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).
Main Activities To ensure the quality and the availability of the physical maritime, coastal and ocean environment information, in order to meet public requirements, three aspects has been identified :
* As French National Hydrographic Service, SHOM has a mission of Broad-spectrum hydrography to meet all sea users requirements, in particular, with a view to ensure the safety of navigation in compliance with the international agreements signed by France.
* SHOM provides a HOM (Hydrography, Oceanography and Ocean Meteorology)’s support to meet Defence requirements with regards to assessing the maritime environment.
* SHOM as a support to French maritime Public Policies : for example the development of a seamless cartographic reference for integrated coastal management, the provision of an extended range of digital products and services, or the delineation of maritime areas
