LMO Description
Organisation European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF
Details
Level of authority International
Formal Mandate ECMWF operates one of the world's largest super computing facilities and the world leading advanced numerical models of the Earth system. ECMWF data and products, which include access to its huge archive, are delivered through the European National Meteorological Services of the ECMWF Member States, or via dedicated servers or networks. ECMWF also manages the Regional Meteorological Data Communication Network (RMDCN), comprising both the WMO (World Meteorological Organization) telecommunication system for the European Region and the telecommunication system between ECMWF and its Member States.
Main Activities ECMWF delivers advanced global data assimilation and medium-range to extended range forecasts (weather and sea state), and other services including real time quality control of observations. ECMWF also produces periodical re-analysis providing the most accurate four-dimansional history of the atmosphere (called ERA-40).
