Formal Mandate Mission of Ravi/NCGI:
“Ravi/NCGI is stimulating and coordinating the development of an effective SDI both national and international.”

Ravi/NCGI comprises all public services and local authorities with an important role in the provision of geographical information. These organizations aim to improve the spatial information infrastructure by means of cooperation and agreement, thereby forming a uniquely authoritative organization.

Those participating in the Ravi include the Association of Water Boards, Cadastre, land Registry and Mapping Agency, Interprovincial Council, Survey Department of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment (VROM), the Ministry of Internal Affairs (BZK), Institute for Public Health, Environment, and Nature (RIVM) and the Netherlands Institute for Geological Technology (NITG-TNO).

As a cooperative body, Ravi/NCGI is a non-profit organization with a public duty. Each of the participating authorities has a representative in the board of directors.
Main Activities The following roles are distinguished at Ravi/NCGI:
- the cooperative- and implementation role;
- initiation and communication role;
- evaluation role.

For the cooperative- and implementation role the following activities clusters exist:
• Standardization
• Development and maintenance of:
- semantic standards for sectoral information models (like Cultural Heritage, Topographic, Water and other) based on a conceptual model (Basic schema for Geo-information)
- metadata standards for discovery of datasets and datasets series
- network services
based on ISO, OGC, W3C and other relevant standards
• Development and maintenance of the national clearing for geo-information
• INSPIRE
Preparational activities to translate the INSPIRE working program into the Dutch INSPIRE component
• DURP (Digital Exchange of Spatial Plans)
Development and maintenance of standards and setting up a portal in the SDI context for spatial plans.
• Space for Geo-information
Space for geo-information is a program (40 m €) for the development of a national SDI. This program is temporal and the results/products will be consolidated in Ravi/NCGI.

In the initiative role Ravi/NCGI introduces new initiatives, new networks, international partners, and new innovations. The communication role is inextricable connected with the platform function of the Ravi.

In the evaluation role, Ravi/NCGI will monitor the state of the national SDI. It will give a better view on the coherence of government initiatives and results that are taken to stimulate the use of IT in the field of geo-information.

Comments Ravi and NCGI are at the moment two formal organizations with tasks that are more and more the same. NCGI was formed by a Ravi initiative in 1995 as a separate task for setting up and maintain the National Clearinghouse for Geo-Information. In March 2005 the board of directors from both organizations has decided that it’s more efficient for the tasks in years to come (for example INSPIRE) to bundle and combine expertise. This will result in a new organization in place for Ravi and NCGI at 1 September 2005.
