The information accessible on this area of the INSPIRE site has been provided by Spatial Data Interest Communities (SDICs) and Legally Mandated Organisation (LMOs) via the ongoing Call for Expression of Interest for INSPIRE development.

The information includes:

LMO Description
Organisation Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI)
Details
Level of authority National
The Netherlands
Formal Mandate KNMI aims at providing society with information concerning the weather and other geophysical phenomena. KNMI therefore collects data from its own observation network as well as through the international exchange of atmospheric, seismic and oceanographic data. Processing of these data results in general forecasts for the Netherlands and products to be used by researchers, decision-makers and commercial companies. KNMI is the national expertise centre in the Netherlands for meteorology, climate research and seismology.

As from March 2002, the legal tasks of KNMI have been defined in the KNMI Law (http://www.knmi.nl/voorl/nader/wet130901.pdf, in Dutch).
Main Activities - Making available general forecasts for society;
- Issueing severe weather warnings;
- Providing weather information for air traffic control;
- Act as an independent expert in legal issues when exact weather conditions are to be reconstructed;
- Maintaining a climatology of the Netherlands;
- Research and development in the area of atmospheric science, oceanography and seismology;
- Advising Dutch government about climate policy, and space policy (contribution to Earth Observation Programs);
- Maintain and further develop an observation network and data infrastructure.
