Organisation International Alliance for Interoperability
Details
Level of authority International
Formal Mandate The International Alliance for Interoperability (IAI) is an international network of organisations where each constituent body is registered as a 'not for profit' entity according to the rules of the region in which it is located.
The mission of the IAI is concerned with process improvement and information sharing in the AEC/FM industry.
Main Activities The main activities of the IAI are the development, support and promotion of the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) model. IFC is a large information model covering the lifecycle of AEC/FM projects and includes for shape, cost, process, schedule and other representations of constructed facilities. The IFC model is now widely implemented and IAI provides support to software implementers to ensure consistent interpretation of the model capabilities. IAI is also now actively promoting IFC in use through the nes 'buildingSMART' initiative.

Comments There is a strong relation between buildings and the geography in which they exist. To improve this relationship between software applications used for geographic information and AEC/FM, the IAI is currently carrying out the IFC for GIS (IFG) project led by the Norwegian Forum of the IAI Nordic Chapter. This focusses on providing a geographic awareness for building information in AEC/FM and greater knowledge about buildings for GIS applications. Mapping between coordinate systems used for buildings and local geodetic coordinate systems is handled. The project also has an extensive focus on providing transformations between the Geographic Markup Language (GML) and IFC.

Previous Experience relevant for INSPIRE development IAI represents extensive knowledge of building design and construction and the relationship of the building with local geography as well as engineering associated with buildings (civil, structural, mechanical, electrical). This is seen as relevant for INSPIRE with the specific thematic context.
