Formal Mandate Ordnance Survey is a government department responsible for the official, definitive surveying and topographic mapping of Great Britain. It is also responsible for maintaining consistent national coverage of other national important geospatial datasets.

Main Activities Ordnance Survey is the national mapping agency of Great Britain, collecting, maintaining, managing and distributing the definitive record of the features of the natural, built and planned environment, the definitive record of official boundaries and the record of such other naitonal geographic datasets as required by government and the private sector. Ordnance Survey operates as a Trading Fund. The funded operations include in particular:
maintaining and enhancing the National Topographic Database;
delivering survey and mapping activities in the national interest;
providing national coverage of medium and small scale maps;
making available a range of products, licences and services to meet the needs of customers in the UK, in Europe and worldwide;
providing survey, mapping and geospatial information products and services in support of broader government policies;
developing, maintaining and enhancing other geospatial datasets;
contributing to any government policy to develop partnerships with other public and private sector bodies;
providing advice to government on all survey, mapping and geographical information matters;
operations incidental, conducive or otherwise ancillary to the above operations.

Previous Experience relevant for INSPIRE development Ordnance Survey has extensive experience in the collection, management and supply of digital geographic information. We have successfully built a leading edge business based on the licensing of high quality digital geographic information to a wide customer base. Our experience extends to metadata, data specifications, network services and data policy issues. Within the UK we are Adviser to central government on survey, mapping and geographic information issues and take a leading role in the development of spatial data policies, standards and infrastructures in the UK. We have provided experts from the UK to go on to the INSPIRE Expert Group and Working Groups in the past and would hope to play a significant role in the future development of INSPIRE's Implementing Rules.
